Spirit, Soul, and Stomach
We all want those days where everything just flows—like that feeling when you wake up to a sunny morning, the birds are chirping, and you’re on the way to get your favorite breakfast. But how do you make sure those good days happen more often? It’s all about the balance, my down to earth friend. Specifically, Spirit, Soul, and Stomach—the three S’s for a good day.
Let’s break it down, and take some notes from our Bible buddies.
1. Spirit: Aligning with God First.
The Spirit is like the GPS of your life. If it’s set to the wrong destination, everything else is going to get a bit… off. I mean, imagine following a GPS that takes you to a random farm in the middle of nowhere when you were just trying to go to the supermarket. Not fun.
Who did it well?
Let’s talk about Daniel. This guy knew how to keep his spirit in check. No matter what, he was all about that connection with God. He prayed three times a day (I mean, not all of us have that kind of dedication, right?). Daniel wasn’t about to get distracted by anything—no lion’s den, no kingdom crisis. He was a man with a mission. Daniel 6:10 says he was consistent, and that’s why God had his back. Talk about divine GPS!
Who failed here?
Then we have King Saul. Poor guy had it all going for him at the start, but somewhere along the way, his GPS got scrambled. You know that feeling when you’re following directions and the app suddenly glitches? That was Saul. In 1 Samuel 13:8-14, he got all impatient and offered a sacrifice before Samuel could arrive. Talk about trying to shortcut the process. That “shortcut” led straight to a kingdom loss. Oops.
2. Soul: Guarding Your Emotions and Mind.
Your soul is your emotional engine. Without care, it’s like running on fumes. Think about it—if you don’t look after your emotional health, you might find yourself on an emotional rollercoaster. It’s like eating a spicy meal without drinking water… your emotions will be all over the place!
Who did it well?
Let’s take David—man, this guy had his emotional highs and lows. But he always knew where to turn. When his soul was down, he turned to God. In Psalm 42:5, he literally talked to his soul like, “What’s up with you? Why are you so down?” That’s some next-level self-talk. “Put your hope in God!” he reminded himself. Like, David was like the emotional coach of his own life. "Come on, soul! Get it together!"
Who failed here?
And then there’s Elijah. One minute, he’s calling down fire from heaven (seriously, that’s a flex), and the next, he’s sitting under a tree, asking God to take him out. 1 Kings 19:4 says he was just emotionally drained. I mean, can you blame him? We’ve all had those days where we’re like, “God, I can’t do this anymore.” But Elijah forgot the most important part: God’s still got something more for you, even in your exhaustion.
3. Stomach: Nourishing Your Body.
Here comes the Stomach—the literal “fuel” for your day. Think about your body like a car. If you forget to put fuel in, you’re not going anywhere, right? So why do we expect to operate at full speed without taking care of our physical needs? Whether it’s food, rest, or hydration—don’t skip out on this one.
Who did it well?
Jesus knew exactly what he was doing when it came to balance. Matthew 4:4 says, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God." But let’s be honest—Jesus didn’t just skip meals. He ate, rested, and made sure his disciples did too. I mean, he fed 5,000 people with a few loaves of bread and some fish. If that’s not food goals, I don’t know what is.
Who failed here?
Esau, my man. He traded his birthright for a bowl of stew. Genesis 25:29-34 says he was so hungry, he gave away something priceless for instant gratification. It’s like trading your car for a donut when you don’t even have a license. Not the smartest move.
So there you have it: Spirit, Soul, and Stomach. The three S’s that can make or break your day. When they’re in harmony, you’ve got a recipe for a good, productive day. But when one’s out of whack, you’re in for a rough ride.
So, next time you wake up, check in with your Spirit—have you prayed or had your morning “soul fuel”? Take care of your Soul—how’s your emotional health today? And don’t forget your Stomach—make sure you’re properly fueled for the day ahead.
Spirit, Soul, Stomach—the three S’s for a good day. Trust me, you’ll be laughing your way to greatness. Well, not literally—unless you’re eating mangoes.
Spirit, soul and stomach! Such an insight.
