Not everyone is trending.
Not everyone is trending. Some are hidden, healing, and hearing. Elijah's story might just set your heart at peace.
This year, while reading 1 Kings 17, I noticed something wild. That chapter is literally 3 years long.
You see, last year, as I was rushing through the Bible, the Lord gently told me that I was reading too fast and ended up missing key moments. It’s easy to miss these golden bits when we’re trying to finish a program, prepare a sermon, or prove a point. 🤦
So this year, I’m repenting by slowing down my reading. Niombewe nifaulu kwa hii safari.
Now, back to chapter 17:
It kicks off with Elijah delivering a bold message to Ahab — that it won’t rain until Elijah commands it. Where does he get that confidence? It's grounded in God’s earlier word to Israel in Deuteronomy 11. Then when chapter 18 begins, it says, "…the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year…" — meaning, between 17 and 18, a whole 3 years pass!
I noticed a few crazy things:
1. For 3 years, God didn’t give Elijah any public word to deliver.
2. For 3 years, all our brother did was eat, drink, and sleep.
3. For 3 years, he depended on ravens and a widow for survival.
4. For 3 years, he wasn’t seen, heard, or recognized by people as "The Prophet."
This hit different because sometimes, if you’re a man (or woman) of God, you start wondering — what’s going on? "God, why aren't you using me like you're using others?"
Especially in this social media world — when others are posting pictures of packed crusades, testimonies, miracles — while all you’re doing is staying alive and reading your Bible, it’s easy to feel forgotten or even irrelevant.
You see, Elijah believed he was the only prophet left. He truly thought Jezebel had wiped out the rest. What he didn’t know was that God had preserved 7,000 others who hadn't bowed to Baal! 7,000 other believers in God were going through a similar season of isolation (eating, drinking and sleeping).
Man (or woman) of God — sometimes God hides you for your healing and health.
There are times when ministry looks like traveling, preaching, and laying hands., while other times, ministry is simply eating, drinking, and sleeping under God’s instruction.
(But — before you baptize laziness as "ministry" — check in with God and be sure your isolation is His idea, not yours.)
Elijah’s story doesn't end in despair. He comes back on the scene, performs two major wonders, and then God gives him the most beautiful retirement:
- He heals Elijah’s heart,
- Assigns him a successor,
- And welcomes him home.
That part is in 1 Kings 19. Feel free to indulge. I smiled big when I read that.
