The Flip Side of Revelation.
Today, we began our study of the book of Revelation in our fellowship. But before diving deep, it’s good to pause and reflect on the full title of the book. It’s not simply “Revelation” — the proper title is: “The Revelation of Jesus Christ.”
This isn’t about when Jesus will return, but about how He will be revealed in the final days. It’s a revealing, not a calendar. Don't fall for the temptation to work out dates like 2nd August or any other.
As we began exploring, something flipped in our understanding.
Flashback to a Question.
Let’s rewind to Mark 13. After Jesus predicts the destruction of the temple, four disciples — Peter, James, JOHN, and Andrew — pull Him aside privately and ask:
“Tell us, WHEN will these things happen? And WHAT will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?” – Mark 13:4
Jesus gives a prophetic answer, but doesn’t respond to both parts of their question. Instead, He finishes with this statement:
“But about that day or hour NO ONE knows, not even the ANGELS in heaven, nor the SON, but only the FATHER...” – Mark 13:32
And three times, He emphasizes one command: “Watch.”π
Five Key Mentions in Mark 13.
Here’s where it gets interesting. In that moment, the text highlights five key figures or elements:
1. John – one of the disciples seeking answers.
2. Angels – spiritual messengers and ministers.
3. Son – the Son aspect of God (Jesus).
4. Father – the only one who knows the full picture.
5. Watch – the command to stay alert and eyeful.π
Now fast-forward to Revelation, and you’ll see how each of these plays a new — almost flipped — role.
The Flip in Revelation.
Let’s look at Revelation 1:1–2:
“The revelation of JESUS Christ, which GOD gave Him to show his SERVANTS what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his ANGEL to his servant JOHN, who testifies to everything he SAW — that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.”
Here’s the flip:
Two Questions, One Answer.
Let’s not forget: the disciples originally asked two questions.
1. WHEN will these things happen?
2. WHAT will be the sign?
Jesus only answered the second bit. And even then, He did it from two different angles:
1. In Mark, the instruction is: Watch out for yourself. How you walk.
2. In Revelation, the message is: Watch out for some things. How you talk.
There is still no timestamp on the day or the hour. That belongs to the Father alone.
The Call to Watch.
Here’s the takeaway:
As you read Revelation, you’re not just reading a prophecy — you’re stepping into a call to watch. Literally watching.π
> Watch the Words. This will guide your walk.
> Watch the world. This will guide your talk.
Revelation isn’t a puzzle to solve, it’s a vision to stay awake to. The signs are there, but the timing remains hidden.
So, if anyone comes claiming to know the exact day of the end, be cautious. They’ve either been deceived, or they’ve somehow heard through the divine relay of Father → Son → Angel → Human. And even then, we’re warned not to fixate on the hour but to live ready.
Until the day is revealed:
> Read the word and watch your life.
> Recognize the signs and trust the Father.
He still holds the time — and He is never late.
